In my opinion, an enterprise-class deployment of SQL Server should never use the Database Maintenance Plan (DBMP) Wizard to set up maintenance, including backups. I am constantly amazed how often I see this. Now, don t get me wrong: the DBMP Wizard is an excellent feature of SQL Server and really helps the small- to mid-sized IT shops and stand-alone businesses where there is little to no SQL Server expertise. When you are managing hundreds (or thousands) of databases across tens or hundreds of SQL Server instances, though, you need to do it yourself by creating jobs and using Transact-SQL. What the DBMP does is essentially create an SSIS package that is called by a SQL Server Agent job. To see the details, you need to actually look at the maintenance plan. To modify the parameters of the maintenance plan, you need to do it in the maintenance plan itself, which takes a few clicks (selecting the maintenance plan, selecting the proper task, and then modifying it). To me, this is much less flexible and you have less visibility into what is happening. Instead of seeing the Transact-SQL BACKUP command in a SQL Server Agent job shown in Figure 3-17, you see what is displayed in Figure 3-18. I find it easier to decipher Transact-SQL than to debug a maintenance plan. In the heat of the battle where you are trying to get your database restored, the DBMP job is not going to help you much. I find it is much better to code and implement things on your own.

Consider this a data access layer class that would call the uspGetServerDetails stored procedure and return the output as a data table. When the WCF application project is created, a service class and corresponding interface template are added to the project.
